the NEW studio
The NEW Studio [formerly Urban Studio] is a community oriented design-build effort founded in 2005 and directed by Associate Professor Robert Michel Charest at Elon University. In a short amount of time the NEW Studio's design-build projects have helped to define University engaged service-learning. Our private and public community partners include the City of Greensboro Department of Housing and Community Development, The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, The YWCA, United Way, Guilford County Technical Community College, SGY-Kobalt tools and Glen Raven Inc. Our Studio is curriculum driven and steered by the core values of responsibility, innovation & affordability. The recenlty completed Container Space at Elon' Environmental Center at Loy Farm serves as the NEW Studio's home base. Loy Farm, co-developed by the NEW Studio, is a living laboratory centered on the trans-disciplinary teaching and research of design and agro-ecology [juxtaposing built environment and food production]. In a broader sense, the farm is a place where disciplines interested in studying the environment [ecological sciences, art, engineering, philosophy, geography, physics, political sciences, etc.] can deepen their academic connections. Elon's Environmental Center is located on a 30-acre campus farm that consists of a 10,000-panel solar farm, high tunnel greenhouses, organic plots, a five-acre managed forest, heirloom groves and beehives.
